The communist regime that reigned over Poland knew that if they allowed the newly inaugurated Pope John Paul II to visit his native country in 1979, the Polish people would become emboldened to resist their oppressive government in the name of their Catholic identity and Polish heritage. At the same time, barring his papal visit would have had the same effect on the people, leaving the government with no choice but to let him in.
Saint John Paul II was instrumental in the defeat of communism in Poland and across Europe, telling the people "You are not who they say you are. Let me remind you who you really are." He is a much needed intercessor in these modern times where so many young people (especially in the West) are abandoning their faith and being taught to surrender their freedoms and embrace increasingly instrusive forms of government.
Pope Saint John Paul II, patron of young people and defeater of communism, pray for us!
