SERRATUS ANTERIOR: THE FORGOTTEN SHOULDER MUSCLE

The serratus anterior (SA) is like that kid in high school no one really knew: a bit mysterious and misunderstood, who was not necessarily in trouble, but was always around trouble when it happened. Unlike your biceps and pecs, it's not a muscle you can see in the mirror as much, therefore it is often neglected, weak and undertrained. However, it's a VITAL muscle for optimal shoulder function and performance.

Your SA originates on the upper ribs and attaches on the shoulder blade. It is responsible for holding your scapula in place, almost like an anchor for the rest of the musculature like the rotator cuff, middle/ lower traps and rhomboids to do their job, as well as for upwardly rotating the shoulder blade. Weakness of this muscle can result in scapular winging, instability/loss of motion with overhead movements, and shoulder pain due to over-reliance on other muscles for stability.

I heard 2 different views of 2 individuals who were raised in the "hood" recently. One described his neighbor almost completely in it's limitations. Most would never make it out of the world he described, as he mentioned. The other man described in brief of its challenges, but primarily he described his creative mind set and approach to choosing a his career path and taking care of his family. It's incredible how your perspective creates your reality. I believe that their are unique challenges anyone who is raised in rough neighborhoods faces, that's undeniable. I also believe that anyone can change their life for themselves if they will diligently work towards and support that belief with intention. God will provide the means. #30DayTransformationTeam
